Comus History
John Milton (1604-1674) wrote Comus, his world famous “masque” in 1634, and it was first performed at Ludlow Castle on 29 September 1634 before the Right Honourable John Earl of Bridgwater, Lord President of the Wales. There have been further performances of Comus in the castle over the centuries; the last of these, in 1959, was attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Margaret, and its success led to the beginning of the annual Ludlow Festival in 1960.
